Wolfson Children’s Hospital named one of the Top Children’s Hospitals in the country by The Leapfrog Group

Acknowledged as one of the most competitive awards American hospitals can receive, designation highlights health care safety and quality standards.

Jacksonville, FL -

Today, The Leapfrog Group announced that Wolfson Children’s Hospital has been named one of only eight Top Children’s Hospitals in the country and one of only three in the State of Florida. The Leapfrog Top Hospital award highlights patient safety and quality achievements and is widely acknowledged as one of the most competitive awards American hospitals can receive.

The Top Children’s Hospital designation is bestowed by The Leapfrog Group, a national watchdog organization of employers and other purchasers known as the toughest standard-setters for health care safety and quality.

“We are honored to receive this distinction and to be recognized as one of only eight Top Children's Hospitals in the country by The Leapfrog Group that recognizes our focus on patient safety and quality,” said Wolfson Children's Hospital President Allegra C. Jaros, MBA. “This designation is a testament to the dedication and collaboration of our team members and providers at Wolfson Children's, Nemours Children's Health, Jacksonville, the University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville, and Emergency Resources Group.”

The quality of patient care across many areas of hospital performance is considered in establishing the qualifications for the award, including infection rates, practices for safer surgery and the hospital’s capacity to prevent medication errors. The rigorous standards are defined in each year’s Top Hospital Methodology.

“It’s exciting to see Wolfson Children’s Hospital was once again recognized as a Leapfrog Top Children’s Hospital. The award signals to our patients, families, medical staff, team members and community that the care provided at Wolfson Children’s Hospital is among the best in the country,” said Jeremy Goodman, MD, MBA, vice president and system quality officer of Baptist Health. “It celebrates excellence in various areas, including patient experience, clinical quality, use of technology and electronic resources and avoiding adverse events. It's another reason that Wolfson Children’s Hospital is the apparent choice for outstanding pediatric care in our region.”

The Top Children’s Hospital designation follows an announcement last month that Baptist Medical Center Jacksonville, Baptist Medical Center South, Baptist Medical Center Beaches and Baptist Medical Center Nassau all received an “A” Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade for providing the highest level of safety in patient care. Letter grades of “A” through “F” are assigned to hospitals across the country using calculations based on more than 30 national performance measures from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, combined with supplemental information Baptist Health voluntarily submits for the overall score.

“Protecting patients from preventable harm is the cornerstone of The Leapfrog Group’s mission,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “Wolfson Children’s has demonstrated that patient safety is their top priority, and we’re truly pleased to recognize them as a Top Hospital this year. Congratulations to hospital staff at all levels who made this national recognition possible.”

To qualify for the distinction, hospitals must rank top among peers on the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, which assesses hospital performance on the highest standards for quality and patient safety and achieve top performance in their category.
