From the Doctor

For as long as I can remember, I wanted to be a doctor. With a major in mathematics and minors in English and Chemistry, I began my medical school training with the intent to obtain an MD, PhD in Biochemistry and to pursue research. After completing my clinical rotations, however, which ended with Family Medicine, I was drawn to direct patient care, specifically Family Practice. This specialty encompasses the whole human being from wellness to illness, from prevention to injury, and from birth to death. I love the continuity of care and continual challenge that family medicine encompasses.

Acknowledging that formal medicine does not have "all" the answers, I recognize the importance of balancing physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual aspects of life. Traditional medicine does not always have a “cure”, but as a physician I strive to provide care and compassion even in difficult and complex cases. While preventive medicine is ideal, treatment of disease processes is equally important; this is best accomplished by engaging patients in their care while following established evidence-based guidelines.

Out of the office, I greatly enjoy living in Jacksonville where I have raised my five boys and enjoy my nine grandchildren, most of this time as a single mom until recently remarried. I believe as physicians we should adhere to the wellness principles we recommend to our patients and I enjoy swimming, biking, and running regularly with my husband. Having “so many” boys participating in sports, I have been honored to serve throughout the years as team/tournament physician for multiple activities ranging from football to baseball to basketball to wrestling. Volunteering and helping others is critical and I serve on the board of two not-for-profit organizations which assist orphans and underprivileged children. I firmly believe we should never give up, we should always give back, and we should serve others in whatever we are called to do to the greatest extent possible.
